Matrei National Park House
Get close to nature at the National Park House in Matrei. Here you can immerse yourself in the natural and cult history of the Hohe Tauern National Park. You will learn lots of interesting facts about the diverse flora and fauna. There are reports about cult and hunting sites from the Stone Age. The changes in farming methods are also illustrated. The "Tauernblicke - Momente des Staunens" exhibition was opened to mark the 25th anniversary of the National Park. This interactive exhibition and spectacular 360° videos as well as the presentation of East Tyrolean National Park hotspots such as Jagdhausalmen, Umbalfälle and glacier trails inspire visitors.
St. Nicholas Church - Matrei
The Romanesque church of St. Nicholas dates back to the 12th century and is the oldest surviving church building in East Tyrol. In addition to the two predecessor churches, the only Roman burial building in East Tyrol from the 2nd century was discovered at this site during excavations by the University of Innsbruck. This means that this place has been used by people for over 1800 years. The particularly well-preserved Romanesque frescoes of the stacked chapel rooms are the art-historical treasure of this church. The frescoes were exposed until 1778 and were covered in soot and lime paint after a fire. It was not until 1857 that the frescoes were rediscovered, and in 1881 they were extensively uncovered and restored. Furthermore, the tower that was later added to the choir and thus the east tower church is a special feature in the entire Alpine region.
Großglockner Panorama
At the National Park Infopoint at the Glocknerwinkel parking lot near the Lucknerhaus in Kals, you can enjoy the best view of Austria's highest mountain - the Grossglockner (3.798 m). At the same time, an exhibition shows the "Big Five" of the Hohe Tauern National Park: ibex, chamois, marmot, eagle and bearded vulture. With a bit of luck, you can spot the "Big Five" directly from the viewing platform against the gigantic backdrop of the Grossglockner. The "Glocknerwinkel" is also an ideal starting point for hikes and ski tours - here you always have the "Glockner" in view - it seems close enough to touch.

City of Lienz
The capital Lienz is known for the many hours of sunshine that can be enjoyed there with a magnificent view of the Dolomites. The colorful flowers and palm trees, the street cafés and colorful house facades give the small town a southern flair. How about a cappuccino on the main square after a shopping tour through Lienz? A hotspot for culture and sports enthusiasts - annual highlights such as the Dolomite bike tour, the international street theater and circus festival in July, the big summer festival in August and the Red Bull Dolomitenmann in September attract many visitors to the sunny town.
Schloss Bruck - Castle at Lienz
Bruck Castle is the former residence of the Counts of Görz. The monumental castle, owned by the town of Lienz since 1942, is one of the main sights in East Tyrol and today houses the museum of the town of Lienz with the most extensive collection of works by the East Tyrolean painter Albin Egger-Lienz. Above all, the castle is also a meeting place for art and music lovers. In cooperation with Stadtkultur Lienz, concerts and events are regularly held in the castle courtyard.
Galitzenklamm Water Adventure Park
The water show trail on the Galitzenbach stream with its spectacular bridges and steep rock faces is a popular excursion destination. Just a few minutes' drive from Lienz and located at the foot of the Lienz Dolomites, the water adventure park is particularly popular in the hot summer months. 5 via ferratas with different levels of difficulty attract climbers from near and far. The large water playground with rope ferry and stone ball mill is not just for children. By the way... the snack station in the Galitzenklamm gorge is known far and wide for its great ice cream sundaes.
Roman Town of Aguntum
Excavations and the museum describe the history of the Roman town of Aguntum near Lienz. Archaeological excavations have been carried out since 1912 and archaeologists from the University of Innsbruck have been responsible for the excavations since 1991. But not everything seems to have been discovered yet. There are always new, impressive excavations, such as the Atrium House, the craftsmen's quarter and the large thermal baths. The Aguntum forum is currently being excavated. The museum provides an insight into everyday life in Roman times and displays all kinds of finds from Aguntum and other areas of the former province of Noricum.
