The Ganzer family’s 4-star superior hotel is situated in the heart of Matrei in East Tyrol, within the Hohe Tauern National Park. The hotel has 40 rooms in four categories: Mountain Room, Mountain Room Plus, Nature Suite, Nature Suite Plus, Family Room, Tyrol Suite, Swiss Stone Pine Suite and Outside Suite.

We are open from mid-May to early November and from mid-December until after Easter.

The hotel is family-run by the Ganzer family. Alessa and Daniel Ganzer are the second generation to manage the hotel, and they do so with great personal dedication.

Matrei is a market town with a population of 4,675 and forms part of the district of Lienz. Matrei lies at an altitude of 975 metres at the confluence of the Tauernbach and the Isel rivers and is the largest municipality in East Tyrol. The municipal area includes not only the 3,674-metre-high Großvenediger but also the entire Tauern Valley and the upper Isel Valley. 

Archaeological finds in the Matrei area have even been dated to the Early Bronze Age. Until the 20th century, Matrei was known as Windisch-Matrei. Today, tourism plays an important economic role, particularly as winter tourism is also a significant factor in Matrei. 

The region of East Tyrol is an exclave of Tyrol, as it is not connected to the rest of the federal state. In 1919, Austria was forced to cede South Tyrol to Italy, and since then East Tyrol has no longer bordered North Tyrol. The largest rivers are the Drau and the Isel, which flows into the Drau at the district capital, Lienz. The Iseltrail is a very popular long-distance hiking trail. There are more than 150 mountains in East Tyrol that are higher than 3,000 metres. 

It is approximately 190 kilometres from Munich to us, and 770 kilometres from Cologne. Hamburg is about 970 kilometres from Outside, and from Berlin it’s a 780-kilometre journey to Matrei. Vienna is about 440 kilometres away from us, and from Zurich it’s about 450 kilometres. 

The easiest way to reach your holiday destination is by car. If you’re travelling from Germany, take the A8 motorway from Munich. At Rosenheim, change onto the A93 towards the border at Kufstein. From the border crossing, you’ll be on the A12, which requires a vignette. At Kufstein, leave the motorway and follow the signs for Felbertauernstrasse, which will take you all the way to Matrei. A separate toll is payable for using the Felbertauernstrasse. 

To travel without a vignette, you must exit at Kiefersfelden and follow the B 171 towards Innsbruck as far as Kufstein. 

Of course, you can also travel to us by train. The final stop on your journey is Lienz railway station, from where we can offer you a free shuttle to the hotel and back again. As well as Lienz, you can also travel to Kitzbühel by train and then continue by express coach to Matrei in East Tyrol. 

The nearest airports are Salzburg and Innsbruck. Both are around 160 km away from us.

There is a free car park directly opposite the hotel. There are also covered parking spaces and underground parking spaces, which you are welcome to book in advance (for a fee). 

The hotel has several Type 2 charging points (subject to a charge) with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW.

In Austria, winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 15 April. This means that winter tyres are required on your vehicle in wintry conditions. We therefore recommend that you fit winter tyres for your journey to East Tyrol. Having a pair of snow chains in the boot will also give you peace of mind, knowing you are prepared for any eventuality.

Its sheltered location south of the main Alpine ridge and the protection afforded by the Hohe Tauern to the north create unique climatic conditions. East Tyrol is the region of Austria with the fewest days of rain and the most hours of sunshine per year. Yes – three supermarkets, a butcher’s, and several shoe and clothes shops. If you’re looking for even more choice, you should take a trip to the sunny town of Lienz (about 20 minutes from Matrei).

There are several doctors available to you. You will also find a pharmacy right in Matrei.

We’re also happy to treat guests who aren’t staying with us to a culinary experience! Our breakfast buffet features regional, seasonal and many homemade delicacies. In the evening, the menu changes daily and offers a 6-course meal with a choice of vegetarian, meat or fish options, as well as other main courses and children’s meals. Here, too, the focus is on the highest quality and locally sourced produce. Special requests, dietary requirements and vegan dishes are available upon advance booking.

Our kitchen can cater to your individual requirements regarding food intolerances, allergies and similar issues. Please do ensure you let us know about these before your arrival so that we can buy the necessary ingredients. 

The price for bed and breakfast is reduced by €30 per day for adults and €15 per day for children.

You may bring your four-legged friend with you on a limited basis, subject to availability – please therefore always let us know when making your booking. We charge €25 per day per pet (excluding food) and ask that you keep your pet on a lead at all times whilst in the hotel. Pets are not permitted in the hotel restaurant or the adjoining buffet area. On request, we can reserve a table for you and your pet in the Barstüberl – the number of tables is limited. Furthermore, pets are not permitted in the Natur SPA or on the sunbathing lawn, particularly in the natural pond. Pets are, however, welcome in the hotel lobby and on the garden terrace.

Thanks to the Großglockner, the area around Matrei is particularly well known for hiking and mountaineering. The Hohe Tauern National Park is renowned throughout Europe and is a popular destination for mountaineers and hikers. The guided ranger tours on offer in the national park are, quite rightly, hugely popular. Naturally, in an area with 60 three-thousand-metre peaks, there are also plenty of opportunities for climbing. 

There are also plenty of mountain bike routes here that will really get cyclists working up a sweat. Adventurers will particularly enjoy a rafting or canoeing trip on the Isel, the longest river in the Southern Alps. You can also get that extra adrenaline rush from paragliding, and if you believe that true happiness is found on horseback, you’ll find it at the indoor riding arena in Matrei.

As an official hiking hotel, we offer three guided hikes a week – free of charge for our hotel guests. Transport by hotel shuttle bus to the starting points is included. In addition, our guests can take part in a National Park ranger tour free of charge (several guided tours per week).

On the day of your arrival, you will receive the Welcome Card, which allows you to use most forms of public transport in East Tyrol. It also entitles you to various discounts on mountain railways, museums and tourist attractions.

Yes – rucksacks, walking sticks, etc. are available free of charge at reception. Water bottles, first-aid kits, etc. are also available from our hotel shop.

Yes – we hire out e-mountain bikes, including helmets, for a fee. Any bikes you bring with you can be stored safely at the base camp.

At the hotel, there is a secure place to store your bike at Basecamp.

The Goldriedbahn cable car is open in summer (please check opening times) and provides easy access to various walks, such as the Europapanoramaweg via the Kals-Matreier Törl.

The valley station of the Großglockner Resort Kals-Matrei is just 900 metres from the hotel. The free ski bus stops at the hotel and takes you to the valley station in just a few minutes.

The ski resort has 16 modern lifts, which can carry more than 24,000 people per hour and reach altitudes of over 2,400 metres. This means queuing times are virtually non-existent. More than 47 kilometres of ski runs are then at your disposal for your skiing enjoyment.

100% of the slopes can be covered with artificial snow, and there are even three snow-covered valley runs, ensuring reliable snow cover throughout the winter.

Yes – a free ski bus stops right next to the hotel and runs at regular intervals to the valley station of the Großglockner Resort (900 m away).

At our base camp (ski room), every room has its own lockable locker for ski equipment – including a drying system for boots.
